Proposal for a Year of Jubilee for US Taxpayers

Imagine getting a 20-30 percent raise next year. What would you do with the extra cash?
  • Pay off bills?

  • Shop for necessities?

  • Buy a house or car?

  • Upgrade your insurance coverage?

  • Take care of your health?

  • Increase your savings?

  • Take an extended vacation?

  • Give more generously to the needy?
All of these uses for your money are healthy for you and good for the economy. Here is how you could get the extra money - if the federal government would declare a year of Jubilee and forgive the individual tax burden for one year.

Think of the stimulus to the economy if we all had more ready money. Think of the cash flow that would return to the financial system if individuals could pay back their debts. Think of the good this would do for you - your neighbors - your community - your country.

I wish the government would take up this spiritual tradition and proclaim a year of rest and release. In the Bible this tradition happens every 7 years. Isn't this a good idea for us today?
